Caves, 14th April
Hello everyone!
Today marks the halfway point of this soundtrack, so I thought Id make a bit more of an in depth analysis of each track, starting with:
Sands:
Sands is the first track I made, which made me decide to start the series. It has a heavy use of the djembe, winds and chanting (this will become common (: ). Its split up into 5 parts, mainly:
Intro (0:00 - 0:19) - This section has winds, a basic melody, and three repeating drum hits with me chanting underneath. At the same time there is a bass building up, which leads into the first verse.
Verse (0:19 - 0:57) - The verse has more strings and drums as well as chimes to fill the space. It repeats twice, before transitioning into the chorus.
Chorus (0:58 - 1:36) - The chorus is the main big part of the song. All the light hits are taken away, and mainly darker sounds are present. The underlying chants create energy and keep the track moving. This then transitions into the break section of the song.
Break (1:36 - 2:14 ) - The break section is supposed to completely change the sound of the song, to make sure that the sound doesnt become stale and repetitive. Hence a lot of chimes are introduced, and a main wind instrument takes the lead. This breaks the main feel, while still maintaining the vibe of the song, and transitions to the outro.
Outro (2:14 - 2:52) - This part transitions the break nicely back to the start of the track, where it then loops
Trees:
Trees is the second track I released, the goal being to be a bit more upbeat and have more energy than sands. It originally started at the 0:30 mark, however the intro and outro were added to add some lightness to the track, as well as allow the song to nicely transition to the more chaotic parts of the song. The whole track is written in 5:8, giving it an alien aspect. This with the sound design as well as the chants allows for the track to be this strange alien tribal track. The track consists of X parts, being:
Intro (0:00 - 0:30) - The track starts of light, as having a consistent dark chanty sound gets repetitive and loses its charm. Hence the listener slowly gets guided there, starting with something simple, which leads to the transition
Transition 1 (0:30 - 0:47) - The transition is just a build up with a bassline, that slowly introduces the instruments and builds suspense for the first verse
Verse 1a (0:47 - 1:04) - This was the main idea of the track. The first aspect that was done in the track, the vibe I wanted to create. It consists of dark chanting, an odd wood synthesizer, a djembe, a distorted guitar, and a pad. This transitions really nicely into the next part Verse 1b.
Verse 1b (1:04 - 1:21) - This section is more melodic, cuts down on the chanting, and allows a breather from the more rythmic section of verse 1a. It repeats twice, before transitioning into the break
Break (1:21 - 1:38) - The purpose of the break is to get rid of a lot of things to allow a short reset for the listener, similar to Sands.
Verse 2 (1:38 - 1:55) - The verse comes back for the main sound to return, which then transitions into the build up.
Build up (1:55 - 2:17) - A drop needs a build up, and all this section is for is for the drop afterwards
Drop (2:17 - 2:34) - Is a drop necessary in a video game OST? Absolutely not. Do I care? Absolutely not (:
Outro (2:34 -3:08) - How do you go from drop to nice friendly vibes? Long transition time! As this track loops, thats what this is for
Tides:
Tides is the weirdest track on here. It has a time signature of 11/8. The inspiration for this were the waves coming in (first 5) and going out (last 6). This idea is coupled with the tides slowly rising with the track slowly adding more elements, both found in the verse and duet 1. The basic sections are the, first section changes the pitches constantly by a half step. Then there is my attempt of singing, until it finally turns into a beautiful guitar and piano duet. The whole thing is sad and mysterious, and I think its a perfect track to be part of the OST. The main sections are:
Intro (0:00 - 0:29) - This contains chanting, guitar and piano pitch changes. The guitar being the waves coming in the first 5 notes, and the piano the waves coming back out. The chanting is there to build atmosphere.
Verse 1 (0:29 - 1:27) - This repeats 4 times, each time the chanting becoming more and more, as well as the background swelling up more and more. It still contains the 5 - 6 split to follow the theme of the song. This section is proably the main interesting section, that when listened to on loop would be the most memorable, and is unsurprisingly also my favorite section. The rest is mainly there to be ear candy (:
Duet 1 (1:28- 2:12) - The piano is repeated over and over, with more guitar swelling into the track slowly, until the piano dissapears, and only the guitar is left.
Guitar section (2:12 - 2:26) - The guitar has completely taken over the role of the piano. This allows for a bit of a break, until the song loops again
Outro (2:26 - 2:56) - The outro, uses eerie synthesizers, to bring back the vibe of the weird chanting in the beginning, so that the song can loop nicely.
Planes:
Planes was actually created second, however was only released later as I had other ideas. This track is probably the prettiest, and doesnt include chanting (shocking I know). Its written in 3/4, and is just generally uplifting.
Intro (0:00 - 0:24) - Basic piano and guitar over some wind.
Verse 1 (0:24 - 0:49) - The melody continues with a brass and drums in the background, slowly building up to the chorus.
Chorus (0:49 - 1:42) - Its so pretty ^^ Just listen to it! Its pretty winds and piano! not a lot happens in the first half, and in the second half magic cow bells are added.
Verse 2 (1:42 - 2:33) - This is a slow section, mainly to build atmosphere. Its a simple section that builds up to the second chorus.
Chorus 2 (2:33 - 3:26) - Chorus 2 isn't similar to the first chorus but I dont know what else to call it so here you go (: It adds a bit of energy which this track desperately needs to break up the monotomy of it when listened to on loop, and then this sections transitions to the
Outro (3:26 - 3:40) - The outro is similar to the other outros, as it brings the tracks energy down, and allows for a loop to the beginning of the track (:
Caves:
The final track, which was added today! This track fills a lot of dark space, has big drums, and is way more epic than the other tracks, so I hope you enjoy (:
Intro (0:00 - 0:35) - Slow section of guitar, winds and a loud dark brass. Ends with a big drum as well as smaller drums to bring the energy to the next section.
Verse 1 (0:35 - 0:56) - Similar melody to the intro, but with fast drums. Builds up to the chorus.
Chorus (0:56 - 2:04) - The chorus contains eerie chanting and a big space of darkness made by low drums and brass. Overall I feel like it perfectly would fit into a dwarf mountain.
Outro (2:04 - 2:38) - This outro starts with a fast guitar section, as the rest of the track is relatively slow, to contrast the dark with a bit more faster lighter sections. This slowly fades out, until its able to loop back to the start.
And that concludes the current tracks (:
Hope you all enjoy it, and if you have any tracks you want me to make, please just write a comment!
